RAM memory is always on the move. It gets better and better every day and that’s part of how the tech industry works. You will never see RAM getting lower clock frequencies or lower latencies than the previous generation. Nowadays, RAM memory got to 4th legit generation, DDR4, but the fact is that the generation gap between DDR memory is not so huge in terms of performance. Improvements from DDR3 to DDR4 in real life scenarios are not so extraordinary. In fact improvement is kind of none…

But even though DDR4 memory didn’t break any records, how much do we need? The vast majority of nowadays laptops are sold with 8 GB DDR4 memory, but there are also 4 GB laptops or 16 GB laptops on the market. Why? Isn’t the same amount enough for everybody? Well, not always… The quantity of RAM memory is linked to personal needs and it scales very much when we’re talking about professionals. Let’s talk about how much ram you could need for a home, office or gaming laptop.

How much is enough for your home laptop?

Home laptops are used for browsing the web, sometimes playing discrete games, e-mail, watching movies, social media and that’s all. For browsing the web and all other stuff you don’t quite need more than 8 GB of RAM. You could be fine with 4 GB too if Chrome wouldn’t be such a resources hungry beast. Sometimes you might be needed to go up to 16 GB or RAM with home laptops if you intend to render some videos for vlog or stuff like that.

How much RAM is enough for production laptops?

What does a production laptop mean? Well, we’re talking about desktop workstation replacement. Dell’s Precision series is a good example or the almighty 15 inch MacBook Pro. Of course, Lenovo’s ThinkPads could be a good choice for photo/video producers too. These kind of laptops need a lot of RAM because Adobe suite is power hungry software, video rendering as well. You can put up to 64GB (4x16GB) 2133MHz DDR4 SDRAM, Non-ECC memory in some Dell’s products.

Production laptops need at least 32 GB of RAM memory

How much RAM is enough for gaming laptops?

Games doesn’t need RAM, doesn’t need CPU (most of modern titles can run just fine on dual cores). Games need graphics card. There are a lot of gaming oriented laptops on the market sold with only 8 GB or RAM. Well, that’s the truth, having 32 GB of RAM in your gaming laptop won’t boost your FPS, it’s useless. If you are willing to do some screen capture or to stream your gameplay online, go for 16 GB of RAM.
